What is Puja?

More than a festival

উৎসবের থেকেও বড়।

Durga — the warrior goddess — slays the buffalo-demon Mahishasura: the triumph of good over evil. But in Bengal the myth wears a domestic face. Durga is also Uma, the daughter who returns to her maternal home for five days each autumn.

That homecoming is what Kolkata celebrates — with art, food, music and community on a scale no other festival matches.

History

A city with centuries of memory

Every date we print is sourced. What we cannot verify, we do not print.

1757

A household puja becomes legend

Nabakrishna Deb's family puja at Sovabazar — traditionally dated to 1757. The 'Raja' title was conferred later (c. 1766), but the puja endures as one of the city's oldest bonedi traditions, with a second household branch from around 1789–90.

1761 / 1790 — disputed

The first Barowari puja

At Guptipara in Hooghly, twelve friends pool resources to worship together — baro-yaari, the 'twelve friends' puja. Sources variously date it 1761 or 1790; the community idea it launched is undisputed.

1910

Barowari reaches Kolkata

The Bhowanipore Sanatan Dharmotsahini Sabha organises the city's first Barowari Durga Puja at Balaram Basu Ghat Road — the festival steps out of private courtyards into public life.

1919

Bagbazar goes sarbojanin

Begun in October 1919 as the Nebubagan Barowari Durga Puja at 55 Bagbazar Street; named Bagbazar Sarbojanin in 1926. Often misdated to 1918 — 1919 is the documented year. (The 'oldest sarbojanin' title is disputed by Simla Byayam Samity.)
